Clean Your Windows\Prefetch Directory to Improve Performance

WINDOWS XP – Prefetch Directory Cleanup
Public Domain – www.Net4TruthUSA.com/TechSupport.htm

Windows XP and XP Professional use a unique methodology to speed up the Operating System – at least initially (when it is first installed). The Prefetch directory can be thought of as a “page file” – or more precisely a “page file folder” – where the OS keeps fragments of memory that are used more or less as a high speed “scratchpad”. The OS does not keep track of these files between boot-ups, and consequently, over time, what happens is that you will accumulate hundreds or even thousands of small files which not only eat up a lot of disk space, but must be searched through when XP needs a particular file. A “point of diminishing returns” is reached where the time it takes to look for the file exceeds the time saved by keeping the file available to be loaded. When you notice your PC becoming sluggish, and you’ve tried everything else – it’s time to clean out the Prefetch directory.

This is a unique technique for Windows-XP.  We know that it is necessary to delete registry and TEMP files for Win9x, ME, and Win-2000 periodically. Prefetch is a new and useful technique in Windows XP.  However, after using XP for a while, the Prefetch directory can get full of junk files and dead links will accumulate in the Prefetch catalog, which can slow down your computer considerably. There are several ways that you can solve this problem:

1. You can periodically delete the files manually. To do this:

*       Open C:/windows/prefetch, delete all those junk and obsolete files, and reboot.  It is recommended that you do this every month.

2. You can set up a task in a BATCH file to perform this function (invisibly) every time you boot your machine.

3. You can also set up a BATCH file which you run manually every so often, or which runs when you boot the machine. I have provided the Batch file and two other programs: ASK.COM and WAIT.COM. By using these in combination, you can set up either automatic or manual deletion of the files. The Batch file will open a DOS window, display a list of the files, and ask you whether or not you want to delete the files. Once deleted, the files are gone for good - they do NOT go into the Recycle bin. None of these files is vital to machine operation. As you use the machine, whatever Prefetch files are needed, will be automatically constructed. To set up this last option, copy all three programs into the boot drive's root directory. You should use the FILE PROPERTIES option in Explorer to set the file attributes to "read only" so that you don't accidentally erase them.

I have included with the program, a text file: PrefetchReadMe.pdf which explains how to install and use the utility. The ASK.COM and WAIT.COM programs are also useful for your own Batch file work. You can incorporate them to work with your Autoexec.bat file or other startup files. The ASK.COM program returns the user's response into descending values of 'errorlevel'. By testing the “errorlevel’ the batch file directs instruction execution to move to another (labeled) part of the file. How it works will be apparent when you examine the CLEANPF.BAT file included in the archive. The WAIT.COM simply pauses the display for x-number of seconds, in order to gain the time needed to read the display. The WAIT.COM program is invoked simply by:

C:\wait x

Where x a number (0-255) = number of seconds. After x seconds pass, the Batch file will continue as usual.
